Handyman flat rate vs hourly pricing
Updated November 1, 2026 · QuoteCubby
When to quote a flat rate and when to bill hourly, and how to build a flat price from your estimated hours without losing money on surprises.
What published sources say
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| Angi (Sep 2026) | Labor $50–$150 per hour; flat fees common for well-defined tasks; emergency, rush, after-hours or weekend upcharges. |
| HomeGuide | Small jobs (under 2 hours) $50–$250; medium (under 5 hours) $250–$500; large (5 hours to a few days) $500–$1,500. |
| Taskrabbit (Oct 2026) | Small jobs under 2 hours; medium 2–4 hours; large half or full day. Evening, weekend or same-day service often has premium pricing. |
Flat rate built from hours
A flat rate is still built from time. The calculator turns your estimated hours into a flat price with a buffer for surprises, so you can quote one number and still protect your hourly pay. Harder jobs get more time, not a guess:
| 2-hour job | Price | Real $/hour |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | $210 | $67.28 |
| Tricky (+25% time) | $255 | $68.58 |
| Hard (+50% time) | $300 | $69.51 |
| Normal, evening or weekend (+25%) | $260 | $84.13 |
| Normal, same-day (+50%) | $315 | $102.67 |
Example only, using the calculator’s starter numbers: $75 per hour target, 20 minutes of setup and cleanup, a 15% buffer for surprises, $3 of consumables per working hour, 20% material markup, 10 round-trip miles at $0.35 per mile, 20 minutes of driving, $125 minimum, rounded up to $5. These are not market rates. The +25% and +50% are the calculator’s starter numbers, not market data.
Write what the flat price includes, and say you’ll check with the client before going further if you find something that changes the job.

The free QuoteCubby handyman calculator prices a job from your estimated hours, difficulty and timing, adds materials with your markup, consumables, supply runs and the drive, and shows what you really earn per hour.

Should a handyman charge flat rate or hourly?
Both are common. Angi says flat fees are common for well-defined tasks, with hourly labor of $50–$150. Hourly protects you on jobs with unknowns; flat rates are easier for clients to say yes to.
How do I price a flat-rate job?
Estimate the hands-on time, add a buffer for surprises, setup, cleanup and the drive, then price that at your target rate plus materials. That’s what the calculator does.
How do I charge for evenings, weekends or same-day jobs?
Angi and Taskrabbit both mention after-hours, weekend or same-day premiums but don’t give a standard percentage. Pick your own surcharge and say it on your price sheet.
