Handyman material markup

Updated November 1, 2026 · QuoteCubby

Published markup ranges for materials, how consumables are usually handled, and how supply runs change your real hourly pay.

Taskrabbit (Oct 2026)10%–30%

Why markup isn’t just profit

Buying materials takes time, you pay up front, and you handle returns and wrong parts. A supply run can easily take longer than the job. That’s why the calculator separates the markup, the supply run and consumables.

Worked example

2-hour jobPriceReal $/hour
No materials$210$67.28
$40 of materials, no markup$250$67.28
$40 of materials, 20% markup$260$70.65
$40 of materials, 20% markup + supply run$315$71.19

Example only, using the calculator’s starter numbers: $75 per hour target, 20 minutes of setup and cleanup, a 15% buffer for surprises, $3 of consumables per working hour, 20% material markup, 10 round-trip miles at $0.35 per mile, 20 minutes of driving, $125 minimum, rounded up to $5. These are not market rates. The 45-minute supply run is a starter number.

FAQ

How much do handymen mark up materials?

HomeGuide lists material markups of 20%–50%+; Angi and Taskrabbit list 10%–30% when the handyman buys the materials.

Do handymen charge for screws and nails?

HomeGuide says basic supplies for minor repairs (nuts, bolts, nails, screws) are included in their rates. The calculator has a consumables cost per working hour so these are covered.

Should the client buy the materials?

Some prefer to. Then there’s no markup, but add time if you still have to pick them up, and say in the quote who supplies what.
