Published minimums and trip charges
| Source | What it says |
|---|---|
| HomeGuide | Minimum charge $75–$200 (a higher first-hour rate or a minimum number of hours). Trip charge $30–$80. Mileage $0.30–$0.60 per mile, or $10–$50 flat. |
| Angi (Sep 2026) | Most handymen charge a minimum call-out fee covering the first hour. |
| Taskrabbit (Oct 2026) | Service minimums typically 1–2 hours. |
Why short jobs need a minimum
With the calculator’s example numbers, a 30-minute fix still needs 20 minutes of setup and cleanup and a 20-minute drive. At your hourly rate alone it would be under $75; the $125 minimum makes it $125, and a 1-hour job is also $125.
Example only, using the calculator’s starter numbers: $75 per hour target, 20 minutes of setup and cleanup, a 15% buffer for surprises, $3 of consumables per working hour, 20% material markup, 10 round-trip miles at $0.35 per mile, 20 minutes of driving, $125 minimum, rounded up to $5. These are not market rates.
Fill the visit
Many handymen ask clients for a short list of small jobs so one visit fills the minimum. Put your minimum on your price sheet and in every quote.

What is a typical handyman minimum charge?
HomeGuide lists a minimum charge of $75–$200, either as a higher rate for the first hour or a minimum number of hours. Angi says most handymen charge a minimum call-out fee covering the first hour; Taskrabbit says service minimums are typically 1–2 hours.
Should I charge a trip fee?
Some do. HomeGuide lists trip charges of $30–$80 and mileage of $0.30–$0.60 per mile (or $10–$50 flat).
Minimum or trip fee?
A minimum is simpler for clients. A trip fee makes sense for far-away jobs. Either way, make sure a short job still pays your minimum hourly rate after the drive.
