Why tall grass takes so much longer
- You may need to raise the deck and cut twice.
- Clippings clump and often have to be bagged or raked.
- You have to walk the yard first for hidden objects.
- The mower works harder: more fuel and blade wear.
Worked example
With the calculator’s example numbers, a one-time cut of an 8,000 sq ft lawn is $90. Set the condition to “tall grass” (+50% mowing time) and it’s $115; “overgrown” (+100%) makes it $140. Add bagging and a disposal fee if you haul the clippings away.

How much more should I charge for an overgrown lawn?
HomeGuide’s cost page lists $70–$150 for an overgrown lawn, which it describes as 1.5 to 3 times the regular rate depending on grass height. Its guide for lawn pros lists $70–$150 per visit for grass over 6 inches.
When does grass count as tall or overgrown?
There’s no single rule. LawnStarter notes that long-grass fees commonly start when grass is over 6 to 12 inches; its own fee applies above 9 inches. Put your own cutoff in writing.
Should I quote an overgrown yard before seeing it?
Ask for photos first, or quote a range and confirm on site. Tall grass can hide toys, rocks and holes.
