How to quote small handyman jobs and honey-do lists
Updated November 1, 2026 · QuoteCubby
Why short jobs need a minimum, how to bundle a list of small tasks into one visit, and how to handle “while you’re here” requests.
Why small jobs need different math
A 30-minute task still has the drive, unloading, cleanup and talking with the client. Price only the 30 minutes and you work for free on everything else. That’s what a minimum charge is for, and it’s why bundling tasks into one visit matters.
Small jobs on their own (calculator example)
| Hands-on time | Before the minimum | Price | Real $/hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | $73.35 | $125 | $96.46 |
| 1 hour | $118.20 | $125 | $64.98 |
Example only, using the calculator’s starter numbers: $75 per hour target, 20 minutes of setup and cleanup, a 15% buffer for surprises, $3 of consumables per working hour, 20% material markup, 10 round-trip miles at $0.35 per mile, 20 minutes of driving, $125 minimum, rounded up to $5. These are not market rates.
Bundle the list into one visit
Ask the client for the whole list up front, with photos. Estimate each task, add them up and price one visit:
| Task | Example hours |
|---|---|
| Hang 2 shelves | 0.75 |
| Recaulk a tub | 1 |
| Adjust a sticking door | 0.5 |
| Patch 2 small drywall holes | 0.5 |
| Replace smoke alarm batteries | 0.25 |
| Total | 3 |
With the calculator’s example numbers, those 3 hours as one visit come to $300. Done as five separate visits, each at least the minimum, they would be $625. If you need a supply run, the visit becomes $355.
Task hours are examples, not standard times. The calculator adds 20 minutes of setup and cleanup and a 15% buffer to your hours, then the drive and consumables.
Tips for honey-do lists
- Get photos first so you can bring the right parts and avoid a supply run.
- Sort the list into “today” and “needs parts or a second visit”.
- Write the list on the quote so “while you’re here…” requests are clearly extra.
- Offer a half-day or full-day block for long lists, priced from your hours.

How do I price a job that takes 30 minutes?
Charge at least your minimum. A short job still has setup, cleanup and the drive. With the calculator’s starter numbers, a 30-minute task works out to $73 before the minimum, so the $125 minimum applies.
Should I quote a honey-do list item by item or as one visit?
List the items so the client sees what’s included, but price the visit as a whole. One setup and one drive for five tasks is cheaper for the client and pays you better than five separate visits.
What if the client adds tasks while I’m there?
Price them on the spot from your time and say the new total before you start. If they don’t fit, schedule them for the next visit.
