How long a yard takes
HomeGuide says a ¼-acre yard takes about 45 minutes to an hour with a push mower, and an acre 20 to 60 minutes with a riding mower (HomeGuide). Angi lists 15–30 minutes for ¼ acre and 1–2 hours for an acre (Angi). Your own times depend on your mower, the yard and what’s included, so time a few jobs.
Same calculator, different sizes
| Lawn | Weekly price | Real $/hour |
|---|---|---|
| ⅛ acre (5,445 sq ft) | $45 | $38.87 |
| ¼ acre (10,890 sq ft) | $80 | $44.25 |
| ½ acre (21,780 sq ft) | $145 | $46.39 |
| 1 acre (43,560 sq ft) | $275 | $47.70 |
Example only, using the calculator’s starter numbers: $50 per hour target, 4 mowing minutes and 2 trim/edge/blow minutes per 1,000 sq ft, 10 setup minutes, +15% for some trees and beds, $4 equipment cost per mowing hour, 8 round-trip miles at $0.35 per mile, 15 minutes of driving, $40 minimum, rounded up to $5. These are not market rates. A big yard on a push mower is slow; with a riding mower, lower the mowing minutes per 1,000 sq ft.
