Why your own minutes matter
A per-room price is a time estimate in disguise. If your rooms really take 30 minutes and you quote as if they take 20, you lose money on every room. A few timed jobs fix that.
How to time a carpet job
- Setup: from parking to the first pass (hoses, wand, pre-spray, corner guards).
- Cleaning time per room: note the room size, soil level and whether you moved furniture.
- Hallways, stairs and closets: time them separately; stairs are slow per square foot.
- Treatments: pet odor, spots and protector, each on its own line.
- Pack-up: until the van door closes.
After a few jobs, put your numbers in the calculator settings (minutes per room, per hallway, per step, setup) and every quote uses them.

Example only, using the calculator’s starter numbers: $60 per hour target, 25 minutes per room and 10 per hallway, 30 setup minutes, $10 per cleaning hour for equipment, $3 of chemicals per area, 10 round-trip miles at $0.35 per mile, 20 minutes of driving, $125 minimum, rounded up to $5. These are not market rates. The percentages and minutes are the calculator’s starter numbers, not market data.

How long does it take to clean one room of carpet?
Time your own jobs: it depends on your machine, the carpet, the soil and the furniture. The calculator starts at 25 minutes per room of about 200–250 sq ft, only as an example you can change.
Does setup really matter that much?
Yes. Hoses, wand, pre-spray, protecting walls and packing up happen on every job. The calculator’s starter number is 30 minutes, and on a small job that can be a big share of the time.
How do I count dry time?
