Drive time and your real hourly pay as a pet sitter or dog walker
Updated November 1, 2026 · QuoteCubby
Short visits are where the drive hurts most. See what a $25 visit really pays per hour with different drives, and how to fix it.
Why short visits are so sensitive to the drive
A 30-minute visit is the most common length (Pet Sitters International, 2026). When the visit is that short, a 20-minute drive adds two-thirds again to your time, but the client sees only the visit.
Same $25 visit, different drives
Here’s what a $25 visit pays per hour of your time when the visit takes 35 minutes (30 on site plus 5 for texts and photos) and gas costs $0.35 per mile:
| Round-trip drive | Round-trip miles | Real pay per hour |
|---|---|---|
| 0 min | 0 mi | $42.86 |
| 10 min | 3 mi | $31.93 |
| 20 min | 6 mi | $24.98 |
| 30 min | 10 mi | $19.85 |
| 40 min | 14 mi | $16.08 |
Example only, not market data. Real pay = ($25 − miles × $0.35) ÷ ((35 + drive minutes) ÷ 60).
Four ways to fix it
- Tighten your area, or charge a travel fee outside it.
- Cluster visits: book clients near each other back to back.
- Set a minimum visit price that covers a short visit plus the drive.
- Offer longer visits: a 45- or 60-minute visit spreads the same drive over more paid time.
Travel fee ranges: HomeGuide’s dog walking page (dated 2023) lists $1–$2 per mile beyond 10 miles (HomeGuide). For your cost per mile, use your own numbers; the IRS standard mileage rate is a common reference (not tax advice).

How do I charge for travel as a pet sitter?
Common options are a travel fee outside your core area, a per-mile charge (HomeGuide’s 2023 dog walking page lists $1–$2 per mile beyond 10 miles), or simply building the trip into your visit price.
What cost per mile should I use?
Use your own vehicle costs. Some people use the IRS standard mileage rate as a reference for business driving. It isn’t tax advice, so check with a tax professional for your situation.
